Google will soon begin rolling out a feature that enables you to share your location in real-time to anyone using the Google Maps App.
The new feature will be added to the side menu of the app which is accessible by swiping to the right, or by pressing the hamburger (three lines) menu in the search bar. It’ll also be accessible by tapping the blue dot which shows your location on the map.
Simply tap the blue dot, select ‘Share Location’ then select who you want to share your location with, how long for, and you good to go.
“When you’re sharing your location, the people you’ve chosen to share with will see you on their map,” Resnick explained. “And you’ll see an icon above the compass on your own map reminding you that you’re actively sharing your location.” Rest assured that you can change your mind and stop sharing your location whenever you want.
You can also share your location from navigation to let your friends know exactly where you are and when you’ll arrive. Just tap the “More” button at the bottom of the navigation screen, then press “Share trip.”
A similar feature to this used to be available in Googles’ own Latitude app released in 2009, however, it never really took off and in true Google style was axed in 2013.
We will see how this attempt at location sharing goes, I guess now it is part of Google Maps it may stick around a while longer.
