WhatsApp turns eight – updates Status feature

WhatsApp turns eight - updates Status feature

WhatsApp turns eight this month and to celebrate the occasion the’re rolling out an update to the Status.

The original status was pretty much the only feature back in February 2009 and it was designed to let your contacts know what you were up to. Whether you were Available, Busy, At the movies or simply At work, selecting one of the text based options would let everyone know.

Every year, when Brian and I would plan projects to work on, we always talked about improving and evolving this original “text only” status feature. – Jan Koum

In the summer of the same year WhatsApp rolled out what would become the main attraction, text messaging. I think it’s safe to say we all know how it went from there. Fast forward to 2017 though and the old WhatsApp Status was looking a little past its sell by date. Next to the likes of Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook, a lick of paint was needed and now we have that update.

Just like eight years ago when we first started WhatsApp, this new and improved status feature will let you keep your friends who use WhatsApp easily updated in a fun and simple way. From all of us at WhatsApp, we hope you enjoy it! – Jan Koum

The reinvented Status allows you to edit and post photos, videos and GIFS with your friends that last 24 hours after which they will disappear. WhatsApp also point out that the Status updates are also end-to-end encrypted, obviously knowing full well that the issue of privacy is a concern for many in 2017.

So, the question that remains is, will you use it? I for one know I probably won’t, it feels like a feature aimed more towards teenagers rather than someone like me who is rapidly clocking forty.

Feel free to give it a go and let us know how you get on in the comments below.
